Adding Blocklist Sources in Blocker Web

Blocker Web Pro lets you add custom blocklists from direct .txt file URLs. These lists can contain domains used for ads, trackers, scam websites, malware domains, unwanted content and other known nuisance websites.

This is useful if you want to block more than just the websites you manually add yourself.

What is a blocklist source?

A blocklist source is usually a plain text file that contains a list of domains.

For example, a list may include domains linked to:

Ads
Trackers
Malware
Phishing
Scam websites
Telemetry
Adult content
Social media
Other unwanted website connections

When you add a blocklist source to Blocker Web, the domains from that list are added to your computer’s blocking system.

What type of URL should I use?

You should use a direct link to a raw .txt file.

Good examples are lists that open as plain text in your browser.

Avoid using normal website pages, GitHub preview pages, blog posts or download pages. Blocker Web needs the direct raw text file, not a page that explains the list.

Below are some popular sources where you can find blocklists. Always review the list and its licence before using it.

StevenBlack Hosts

StevenBlack Hosts is one of the most well-known hosts file projects. It combines several reputable hosts files into one unified hosts file, with duplicate entries removed. It also offers different versions for extra categories such as social, gambling and adult content. (GitHub)

This is a good starting point if you want a general-purpose blocklist.

HaGeZi DNS Blocklists

HaGeZi provides a large collection of DNS blocklists focused on privacy, security, ads, trackers, malware, phishing and other unwanted domains. The project includes different list strengths, so users can choose a lighter list or a more aggressive one depending on what they want to block. (GitHub)

This is useful if you want more choice over how strict the blocking should be.

EasyList and EasyPrivacy

EasyList is a widely used filter list designed to remove adverts from websites. EasyPrivacy is focused more on tracking protection. (easylist.to)

Important: some EasyList files are designed for browser ad blockers and may contain advanced filter rules, not just simple domains. If a list contains lots of special filter syntax, it may not be suitable for Blocker Web.

This type of list is useful if you want extra protection against known harmful domains.

Firebog Lists

Firebog is often used by Pi-hole users and links to many different ad, tracking, malware and suspicious-domain blocklists.

This can be useful if you want to browse multiple community-maintained lists in one place.

How to add a blocklist source

Open Blocker Web.

Go to Blocklists.

Enter a name for the blocklist.

Paste the direct raw .txt file URL into the Raw blocklist URL box.

Click Add Blocklist.

Blocker Web will download the list, check the domains and add them to your saved blocklists.

Tips for choosing a good list

Use lists that are actively maintained.

Start with one or two lists first.

Avoid adding too many huge lists at once.

Choose lists that match what you want to block.

Use lighter lists if websites start breaking.

Only use lists from sources you trust.

Why some websites may stop working

Some blocklists are very strict. They may block domains that are needed for login pages, videos, comments, payment forms, images or other website features.

If a website stops working after adding a blocklist, try disabling that blocklist or using a lighter version of the list.

Important note

Blocklists are created and maintained by third parties. ComputerSluggish does not control the contents of these lists.

Only add blocklists from sources you trust. A poorly maintained or overly aggressive list may block websites that you still want to use.

Summary

Custom blocklists are a quick way to block thousands of unwanted domains without adding each website manually.

For best results, start with a trusted general-purpose list, test your normal websites, then add extra lists only if you need stronger blocking.
