How to Clean Software Cache and History Files in Windows

How to Clean Software Cache and History Files with Easy System Utility

Programs installed on your computer often create cache files, recent activity records, session data and other temporary information while you use them. This data can help software open more quickly or remember what you were doing, but it can also build up over time and use additional disk space.

Easy System Utility lets you analyse and clean supported software data from one place. You can choose exactly which applications and data types to include, review how much has been found and then start the cleanup when you are ready.

This guide explains how to clean software cache and history files in Windows using Easy System Utility.

What are software cache files?

A software cache is a collection of files saved by a program so it can reuse them later.

For example, an application may cache:

  • Images and interface resources
  • Downloaded content
  • Temporary working files
  • Update data
  • Preview files
  • Recently accessed information
  • Website resources
  • Session information

Caching is a normal part of using software. It can improve loading times and reduce the need to download or process the same information repeatedly.

The cache can become less useful when old files are no longer needed, a program has been updated or the stored data becomes damaged.

What are software history and session files?

Some applications also keep records of recent activity.

Depending on the program, these can include:

  • Recently opened items
  • Visited links
  • Form history
  • Login information
  • Session data
  • Recently used pages
  • Frequently visited sites
  • Previous application activity

These files are different from normal cache data.

A cache usually stores reusable temporary resources, while history and session files may remember what you opened, where you visited or whether you were signed in.

Easy System Utility separates many of these options so you can clean cache files without automatically removing every type of stored information.

Open the Software cleaning list

To view the supported software cleaning options:

  1. Open Easy System Utility.
  2. Select Clean from the left-hand menu.
  3. Select Software underneath the cleaning list.
  4. Scroll through the available applications.
  5. Tick the data you want to analyse.

The list only shows cleaning locations currently supported by Easy System Utility. It is not a list of every program installed on your computer.

Some applications have one cleaning option, while others have several separate choices.

Which programs can Easy System Utility clean?

The supported software list can include applications and browsers such as:

  • Battle.net
  • Blender
  • Brave
  • Discord
  • Google Chrome
  • LibreOffice
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Mozilla Firefox

The exact options shown can vary depending on the current Easy System Utility version and the software detected on your PC.

Some programs may have a single cache option. Browsers commonly have separate entries for cache, login data, sessions, top sites, visited links or form history.

Choose the data you want to clean

Read each software cleaning option before ticking it.

For a normal temporary file cleanup, begin with entries labelled Cache.

Cache data is generally the most suitable starting point when you want to remove temporary software files without deliberately clearing saved sessions or recent activity.

Options labelled login data, session history, visited links or form history should be selected more carefully because they can affect how the application remembers you.

You do not need to select every available item.

Cleaning Battle.net cache files

Battle.net can create cache and temporary data while loading the launcher, checking games and downloading updates.

To analyse its supported cache files:

  1. Close Battle.net.
  2. Open the Easy System Utility Software cleaning list.
  3. Tick the Battle.net cleaning option.
  4. Select Analyze.
  5. Review the amount found.
  6. Select Clean.

The Battle.net launcher may recreate some of its cache the next time it opens. This is normal.

Cleaning the launcher cache does not uninstall your games.

Cleaning Blender cache files

See also: How to Include a Custom Folder in Easy System Utility Cleaning Article

Blender can create temporary and cached data while working with projects, previews and other resources.

Close Blender and save your current project before cleaning its supported data.

Removing temporary Blender cache files should not be treated as a replacement for properly saving your work. Unsaved recovery information or temporary project data may be useful after a crash, so avoid cleaning Blender data while actively working on an important project.

Run Analyze first and only continue when Blender is closed.

Cleaning Discord cache files

Discord stores cached images, media and interface data as it is used.

The cache can grow over time, particularly if you view a lot of images, videos or animated content.

To clean the supported Discord cache:

  1. Close Discord.
  2. Check the Windows system tray to make sure it is not still running.
  3. Select the Discord cache option in Easy System Utility.
  4. Click Analyze.
  5. Review the result.
  6. Click Clean.

Discord will rebuild the cache as you continue using it.

Clearing cached content should not remove your Discord account, servers or online messages, as those are connected to the service rather than stored only in the local cache.

Cleaning LibreOffice temporary data

LibreOffice may create temporary files while opening and editing documents.

Before cleaning its supported data:

  • Save every open document
  • Close LibreOffice completely
  • Make sure no recovery prompt is waiting
  • Run Analyze before cleaning

Temporary or recovery files can sometimes help restore work after a crash. It is therefore best to clean this data only after confirming that all important documents have been saved normally.

Cleaning browser software data

Browsers tend to have more cleaning options than other applications.

Easy System Utility may display separate entries for:

  • Cache
  • Login data
  • Session data
  • Form history
  • Top sites
  • Visited links

These options should not all be treated as the same thing.

Cache

Browser cache contains temporary copies of website resources.

This is the safest place to begin when carrying out a normal browser cleanup.

Login data

Login data may contain information used to remember website sign-ins or saved credentials.

Removing it may sign you out or affect saved login details.

Session data

Session files can help restore open tabs and active website sessions.

Cleaning them may prevent your previous browsing session from being restored.

Form history

Form history can include information previously typed into website fields.

Removing it may clear suggestions that normally appear when completing forms.

These records can affect frequently visited website shortcuts and whether the browser remembers that a link has been opened before.

Only select these options when you intentionally want that history removed.

Close software before running the cleaner

Programs can keep cache files and local databases locked while they are open.

Closing the selected software gives Easy System Utility a better chance of analysing and removing its data successfully.

Before cleaning:

  1. Save your work.
  2. Close the selected application.
  3. Check the Windows system tray for any remaining icon.
  4. Wait a few seconds for background processes to stop.
  5. Run the analysis.

Some programs continue running after their main window closes. This is common with browsers, launchers and messaging applications.

If files are repeatedly skipped, restart Windows and run the cleanup before reopening the program.

Analyse the selected software data

Once you have selected the software entries you want to check, click Analyze.

Easy System Utility will scan the supported locations and calculate the amount of data found.

Nothing is removed during this stage.

The analysis gives you a chance to:

  • Check whether the selected programs have built up cache data
  • Confirm that the correct software options are selected
  • Untick login or session data before cleaning
  • Decide whether the amount found is worth removing

Wait for the analysis to finish before clicking Clean.

Clean the software cache and history files

After reviewing the result, select Clean.

Easy System Utility will attempt to remove the files found in the selected software locations.

The amount removed may differ slightly from the earlier analysis because applications and Windows can create or change temporary files in the background.

Some files may also be skipped if they are still open or protected.

Why were some software files not removed?

Common reasons include:

  • The application is still running
  • A background process is using the file
  • The software started automatically in the system tray
  • Security software is scanning the location
  • Easy System Utility does not have permission to access it
  • The file changed after the analysis
  • Another Windows user owns the file

Close the relevant program and try again.

You can also select Start ESU as administrator from the left-hand menu and approve the Windows permission prompt before repeating the cleanup.

Administrator permission will not unlock a file that is actively being used, so closing the program is still important.

Will cleaning software cache remove the program?

No. Cleaning supported cache or history files does not uninstall the application.

The installed program remains on the PC and can be opened again normally.

Some applications may take slightly longer to open the first time after a cache cleanup because temporary resources need to be recreated.

Programs may also need to download fresh data or rebuild thumbnails and previews.

Will it delete personal files?

The standard software cleaner is designed to target supported cache, history and temporary locations rather than general personal folders.

However, some cleaning options deliberately remove stored application information, including login or session data.

Always read the option name before selecting it.

Your own custom included locations require extra care because Easy System Utility cannot determine whether files inside a folder are disposable or personal.

Why does the cache return after cleaning?

Applications create new cache files as soon as you begin using them again.

This is expected.

For example:

  • Discord downloads fresh images and media
  • A browser caches website resources
  • Battle.net checks games and updates
  • Blender creates working and preview data
  • LibreOffice creates temporary files while documents are open

A successful cleanup removes the existing supported cache. It does not prevent the application from creating new temporary data later.

How often should software cache be cleaned?

There is no need to clear every software cache every day.

A cleanup every few weeks or months may be enough for most computers.

You may want to check more often when:

  • Disk space is limited
  • A program is behaving unexpectedly
  • A browser is showing outdated content
  • A launcher is having trouble loading
  • An application creates a large amount of media cache
  • Several programs have been used heavily
  • You are carrying out general PC maintenance

Running Analyze first will show whether enough data has accumulated to make cleaning worthwhile.

Save your software cleaning selections

Once you have chosen the software data you regularly want to clean, select Save Selections.

Easy System Utility will remember the selected Windows and Software entries.

This makes future cleaning quicker and also allows the selections to be used by Easy System Utility PRO automatic cleaning.

Before saving, double-check that you have not accidentally selected login or session data you want to keep.

Automatically clean software cache with PRO

Easy System Utility PRO can run saved cleaning selections automatically.

After saving the software options you want to use, open Settings and configure Automatic Cleaning.

You can choose:

  • Daily
  • Weekly
  • Monthly
  • Clean when Windows starts

Automatic software cache cleaning can be useful when the same applications regularly create temporary data.

A weekly or monthly schedule will usually be more suitable than daily cleaning for most users.

Remember that the program will use the selections you saved, including any browser login, history or session options. Review them carefully before enabling automation.

Cleaning software cache compared with repairing software

Cleaning cache files and repairing a program are different tasks.

Cache cleaning removes supported temporary or stored data.

Software repair is intended for situations where a program is not opening or working correctly.

Easy System Utility PRO includes a Custom Software Repair tool and a deeper analysis option for supported repair tasks.

Start with cache cleaning when the issue appears related to outdated temporary data. Use the Repair section when the problem continues or the program itself appears damaged.

Neither process can guarantee a fix if the issue is caused by hardware, account problems, missing program files or a fault with the software provider.

A simple software cleanup routine

To clean supported application data safely:

  1. Save your work.
  2. Close the programs you selected.
  3. Open Easy System Utility.
  4. Select Clean.
  5. Switch to Software.
  6. Select cache files and any other data you intentionally want to remove.
  7. Leave login and session options unticked when you want to keep them.
  8. Click Analyze.
  9. Review the result and selections.
  10. Click Clean.
  11. Save your preferred selections for future use.
