Why some cache files could not be removed

Why some cache files could not be removed

When cleaning cache files with Easy Gamer Utility, you may see a result that says:

File Could Not Be Removed

This normally means Windows stopped Easy Gamer Utility from deleting that particular file.

It does not always mean that something is wrong with Easy Gamer Utility or your computer.

Easy Gamer Utility will usually skip the file it cannot remove and continue cleaning the remaining files.

What does “File Could Not Be Removed” mean?

Easy Gamer Utility found the cache file but was unable to delete it.

Windows may block a file because:

  • The file is currently being used
  • The game launcher is still running
  • A game is still open
  • A background process is using the file
  • Easy Gamer Utility does not have permission
  • Security software has locked the file
  • The file is protected by Windows
  • The file or folder has unusual permissions

The most common reason is that the related game launcher has not closed completely.

Is this a serious error?

Usually, no.

A cache clean can still be successful even when one or two files could not be removed.

Easy Gamer Utility attempts to remove each supported file separately. If Windows blocks one file, the program continues to the next one.

You may therefore see a mixture of results such as:

  • File Deleted
  • Folder Deleted
  • File Could Not Be Removed

This means some files were removed successfully and others were skipped.

The game launcher may still be running

Closing the main launcher window does not always stop the launcher completely.

Programs such as Steam, Epic Games Launcher, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net and Riot Client may continue running in the Windows system tray.

The system tray is the small area near the clock in the bottom-right corner of Windows.

To close a launcher completely:

  1. Close any game that is running.
  2. Close the main launcher window.
  3. Look near the Windows clock.
  4. Click the small upward arrow if needed.
  5. Find the launcher icon.
  6. Right-click the icon.
  7. Choose Exit, Quit or Close.
  8. Wait a few seconds.
  9. Try the Easy Gamer Utility cleaning tool again.

Simply clicking the X on the launcher may only hide it.

A game may still be running

A game can continue running in the background after its window has closed.

This may happen when:

  • The game has frozen
  • The game is still saving data
  • An anti-cheat process is still running
  • A crash reporter is open
  • The launcher is waiting for the game to close
  • A game service is still active

Open Windows Task Manager to check.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Look through the running apps and processes.
  3. Find the game or launcher.
  4. Select it.
  5. Click End task.

Only close programs you recognise.

Do not end Windows system processes.

The cache file may be locked

Windows locks some files while a program is using them.

A locked file cannot normally be deleted until the program releases it.

For example, a launcher may be:

  • Reading the cache
  • Writing new information
  • Downloading an update
  • Checking installed games
  • Synchronising cloud saves
  • Loading store images
  • Updating login information

Wait for any downloads or updates to finish before cleaning the cache.

Restart Windows and try again

Restarting your computer is one of the easiest ways to release locked cache files.

To try again:

  1. Save your work.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Do not open any games or launchers.
  4. Open Easy Gamer Utility first.
  5. Go to the required cleaning section.
  6. Run the cleaning tool again.

Use Restart, rather than shutting down and turning the computer back on.

A restart gives Windows a fresh start and closes background processes that may have been holding the file open.

Run Easy Gamer Utility as an administrator

Some cache folders are stored in protected Windows locations.

Easy Gamer Utility may need administrator permission to remove files from locations such as:

  • Program Files
  • Program Files (x86)
  • ProgramData
  • Windows folders
  • Protected driver folders

To run Easy Gamer Utility as an administrator:

  1. Open Easy Gamer Utility.
  2. Click Run EGU as admin at the top.
  3. Click Yes when Windows asks for permission.
  4. Return to the cleaning section.
  5. Try the Clean button again.

Administrator permission gives Easy Gamer Utility more access, but it cannot remove a file that is still actively being used.

Antivirus or security software may block the file

Security software may temporarily lock a file while checking it.

This can include:

  • Microsoft Defender
  • Third-party antivirus software
  • Anti-malware programs
  • Ransomware protection
  • Controlled folder access
  • Game anti-cheat software

Wait for the security scan to finish and then try cleaning again.

Do not permanently disable your antivirus software just to remove a cache file.

If you trust Easy Gamer Utility and downloaded it from the official source, you can check your security software’s history to see whether it blocked the program.

Windows may protect the folder

Some folders have special Windows permissions.

Even if you are the owner of the computer, Windows may stop normal programs from changing protected files.

This is most common with folders used by:

  • Windows
  • Graphics drivers
  • Microsoft Store
  • System services
  • Programs installed for every Windows user

Running Easy Gamer Utility as an administrator may help.

If the file is still protected, it is normally safest to leave it alone.

The file may have been recreated

Some programs recreate cache files almost immediately.

This can happen when:

  • The launcher is still running
  • A background launcher service is active
  • The launcher starts automatically with Windows
  • A game update is running
  • Cloud synchronisation is active
  • A graphics driver service is rebuilding its cache

Easy Gamer Utility may remove the original file, but the program creates a replacement before you check again.

This is normal behaviour for cache files.

The cache folder may be read-only

A file or folder can have a read-only setting that prevents it from being changed normally.

You do not usually need to change this yourself.

Try the following first:

  1. Close the launcher.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Run Easy Gamer Utility as an administrator.
  4. Try cleaning again.

Changing folder permissions manually can cause other problems if the wrong folder is changed.

The file path may be too long or damaged

Windows can sometimes have difficulty working with a file when:

  • Its full folder path is extremely long
  • The file name contains unusual characters
  • The file system has an error
  • The folder entry is damaged
  • The drive was disconnected unexpectedly

Restart Windows and try again.

If many unrelated files cannot be opened or deleted, you may need to check the drive for errors.

A single cache file failing does not normally mean your drive is damaged.

A launcher update may have changed the cache location

Game launchers are regularly updated.

A launcher update may:

  • Move its cache folder
  • Change folder permissions
  • Rename temporary files
  • Use a new background process
  • Stop older cleaning methods from working

Make sure you are using the latest version of Easy Gamer Utility.

Easy Gamer Utility updates may include changes for newer launcher versions and cache locations.

What do the Easy Gamer Utility results mean?

File Deleted

Easy Gamer Utility successfully removed the file.

No further action is needed.

Folder Deleted

Easy Gamer Utility successfully removed a supported temporary folder.

The launcher can normally recreate the folder when needed.

File Could Not Be Removed

Windows blocked the file from being deleted.

Close the related programs, restart Windows or run Easy Gamer Utility as an administrator before trying again.

How to try the cleaning process again

Follow these steps in order:

  1. Close the game.
  2. Exit the game launcher completely.
  3. Check the Windows system tray.
  4. Pause any launcher downloads.
  5. Wait a few seconds.
  6. Run the cleaning tool again.
  7. Restart Windows if the file is still locked.
  8. Open Easy Gamer Utility before opening the launcher.
  9. Click Run EGU as admin if needed.
  10. Try cleaning again.

If only a small number of files still cannot be removed, you can normally leave them alone.

Should I delete the file manually?

Manual deletion is not recommended unless you are certain that the file is only a temporary cache file.

A folder may contain a mixture of:

  • Cache files
  • Configuration files
  • Login information
  • Download records
  • Game files
  • Launcher settings

Deleting the wrong file could cause the launcher or game to stop working correctly.

Use the Easy Gamer Utility Clean button where possible.

Will the remaining cache file cause a problem?

Usually, no.

One remaining cache file is unlikely to cause a major problem.

The launcher may still work normally, and the file may be removable after the next Windows restart.

If you are cleaning the cache to fix a specific problem, reopen the launcher and test it.

The problem may already be fixed even though one file was skipped.

Should I keep clicking Clean?

Do not repeatedly click the Clean button while the first cleaning process is still running.

Wait for the results to appear.

If files could not be removed:

  1. Close the launcher properly.
  2. Restart Windows if necessary.
  3. Try the cleaning tool once more.

Repeatedly clicking the button will not unlock a file that another program is using.

Why can Easy Gamer Utility analyse the file but not remove it?

Reading a file and deleting a file require different permissions.

Windows may allow Easy Gamer Utility to see the file name but block it from changing or removing the file.

This is why a file may appear during analysis but show File Could Not Be Removed during cleaning.

Closing the program using the file or running Easy Gamer Utility as an administrator may solve this.

Why can some files be removed but not others?

Different files inside the same cache folder may be used by different processes.

For example:

  • One file may be unused and removed successfully
  • Another file may be open in the launcher
  • Another may be protected by Windows
  • Another may be checked by antivirus software

Easy Gamer Utility handles each file separately, so one failure does not prevent the other files from being cleaned.

Does “File Could Not Be Removed” mean the file is dangerous?

No.

The message only means Windows did not allow the deletion.

It does not mean the file is:

  • A virus
  • Corrupted
  • Malicious
  • Damaging your computer

It may simply be open or protected.

Files could not be removed in simple terms

A cache file usually cannot be removed because a game, launcher or Windows process is still using it.

Close the game and launcher completely, check the Windows system tray and try again.

If the file is still blocked, restart Windows and run Easy Gamer Utility as an administrator.

Easy Gamer Utility will skip blocked files and continue cleaning the files it can remove.
