Sons of the forest Crashing, freezing, and not launching can be a pain but as the game is in early access it is expected to have a few problems. Either way in this guide we will be taking a look at what you can do within Windows to help reduce and resolve sons of forest crashing on your PC or Laptop.

Sons Of The Forest is an open world horror survival game and at times it can be a little terrifying, keeping us on our toes. With all this horror going on you also need craft and build which you can also do with your friends in some online coop.

How to fix Sons Of The Forest keeps crashing on PC

Below you will find a list of different methods you can use to troubleshoot and fix Sons Of The Forest keeps Crashing on a Windows computer.

System specs

First and very important is to make sure your computer build can actually play the game. If your system’s hardware does not meet the minimum requirements then this would explain why Sons Of The Forest keeps crashing.

I have listed the minimum requirements to be able to play the game below.

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
  • Processor: INTEL CORE I5-8400 / AMD RYZEN 3 3300X
  • Memory: 12GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB / AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB

Update Windows 10/11

Make sure you have the latest Windows updates installed on your PC/laptop. If you do not then this can cause issues, not only when it comes to playing games but also within Windows.

Right-click on the Windows start menu icon and select the Settings option

Click on Update & Security (on Windows 11 choose Windows Update)

Click the Check for Updates button

Windows Update check for updates button in Windows 11.

Update your graphics card

It does not matter if you have the best graphics card in the world. If you do not have the correct and latest driver installed for your graphics card, it will not work correctly and could be unstable causing games like Sons Of The Forest to crash on your PC.

Below I have added some links to help you update your graphics card if you are not sure how you can do this.

Background apps

When it comes to running programs and apps in the background while playing games on your computer this is not a good idea.

One of them could actually be conflicting with the game causing it to crash, so I would recommend closing down all programs/apps then try launching Sons Of The Forest and see if that fixes the problem.

There are many programs/apps that can cause issues but some that are known for doing this are Discord, MSI Afterburner fps counter, Razer Cortex, etc.

Power plan

Have you ever changed the power plan within Windows? if you have not then the chances are you could be using a power saving power plan, which will reduce the amount of power that Windows 10/11 can use. This can then cause issues such as making games crash luckily we can easily change the power plan on Windows.

Open the Start Menu and search for Control Panel then open it

Change View by to Small icons then go to Power Options > Click on Show additional plans

Select the High Performance power plan option

Windows Control Panel showing High performance power plan selected.

Add the Windows 10 Ultimate or Windows 11 Ultimate hidden power plan for extra performance.

Run as admin

Try running Sons Of The Forest with extra administrator privileges, this can help resolve many issues. I have done this to fix many errors and problems with games and programs on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Right-click on the Sons Of The Forest shortcut file

Click on Run as administrator

Windows context menu when right clicking executable showing Run as administrator.

Check Sons Of The Forest for corrupted files

If one of Sons Of The Forest game files has become corrupted or missing then this is going to cause issues. I would actually be surprised if you are even able to launch the game, if this is the case. Luckily we can check if one of the game’s files has a problem using the Steam Client.

Steam Client

Open Steam Client and find Sons Of The Forest in the list in your Game Library

Right-click on the game and then go to Properties

Now click Local files and then click on the Verify integrity of game files button

Verify integrity of game files in Steam.

I hope one of the above methods has helped fix Sons Of The Forest crashing on your Windows computer, and you are now able to get back to crafting and trying to survive this scary horror game.
